Input Lag and Gaming Experience on Projectors
Input lag is the technical term for the delay between any input and its subsequent output on the screen. If you are playing a video game on a projector the input lag is the delay you have to face between each pressing of a button and the system carrying out that function in the game’s real time. Now input lag is no laughing matter when it comes to gaming as they are all played real-time and even though the lag cannot be removed, it should be so small that it should be unnoticeable to the human eye. The lag basically defeats the purpose of multiplayer gaming altogether since the move you did before will only appear after some time and the whole thrill just vanishes leaving your disgruntled and frustrated. The difference between now and several microseconds from now is just not acceptable in gaming in any form and so you need to make sure that your gaming projector isn’t guilty of doing this.
Now as I said before, the lag cannot be removed and in digital projectors we can experience lag in some form as opposed to monitors that seem to be working in real-time. No matter what specs they might be able to pull off, the lag will be there for sure. Now people generally don’t care about the lag when going for their favorite projectors. It is because they generally use it for video experiences and in that case lag doesn’t mean anything as the audio can be adjusted according to the lag using delay mechanisms either in the form of a circuit or directly from the video player as well. But the problem arises with interactive activities and the best form of that activity are video games. So, never go for a projector that is termed “just fine” for gaming as the lag will take all the fun out of it.
Now what are the acceptable lag levels? According to a 2009 Eurogamer study, a lag only becomes significant and noticeable if it is less than 10 frames in a 60 Frames Per Second (FPS) setting. But it is not just the input lag that can cause this visible. A game’s own response lag can be quite a bit and if you add it up with the input lag your lag can easily overshoot this figure. But, the problem is that normal games operating at 30 FPS are the most susceptible ones when it comes to lag. Even a delay of five frames can cause visible appearance of it but the solution is quite easy. There are many projectors out there that guarantee lag below this cap especially for gaming purposes.
